They have become dormant and have lost their connection to the past, the few that remain travel less, search for the Entwives less, which is making them fall into silence. For a long time, they have been separated from their other halves, and in this separation many have disappeared or have become treelike, losing their Ent abilities. They have tales, songs, and a language all to their own. The back story to Treebeard and the Entwives, was an interesting one, they themselves have a role in middle earth, just like the Elves, Men, and Dwarves. There is no alternative at this point other than war against Saruman, and to attempt to stop the destruction of their race. Merry and Pippin have brought news to the Ent’s of the darkness that has arisen and the destruction that is coming. The Ent’s are in a way like the dwarves they steer clear of the fight of middle earth, unless that fight equals to their own destruction. Treebeard knows that this could be the final stand for the Ent’s and the end of their race. Days pass and the Ent’s have made the decision, it is war against Saruman and Isengard. Merry and Pippin do not understand the language of the Ent’s and Treebeard sends them off with Breglad while they deliberate. Once they reach the Entmoot Treebeard along with several other Ent’s collectively talk and decide what to do about Saruman’s treachery against the trees.

Along the walk to Entmoot Treebeard talks of the Ent’s and the Entwives, and how they became separated and what has happened to the trees. As Merry and Pippin explain the nature of their quest and their reason for being in Fangorn, Treebeard calls forth a council of Ent’s to make a decision about Saruman and Isengard. Treebeard is unaware of Hobbits as they were not part of the original children born to Middle Earth. Treebeard speaks of the old tales and they first born, and how the elves taught Ent’s to speak. As they walk into Fangorn they encounter an Ent, and not only an Ent but Treebeard. The only hope for these two Hobbits is to try and find the rest of the company, where they are is still unknown since their capture by the Orc’s. Merry and Pippin have escaped into Fangorn and the Orc’s have been slain.
